I suggest that the fix (commit Slicer/SlicerGitSVNArchive@d596340) to prevent crashes is sufficient to close this issue. The bigger issue of giving user-friendly messages to the user, in a dialog box rather than to the console, for loading and saving warnings and errors is now issue #4968 "Report detailed error message about why node save failed."
